You know what caught me off guard about Villa Milna 2? The name makes it sound like some grand estate, but honestly, it’s more like staying at your Croatian aunt’s place – and I mean that in the best possible way. These apartments sit in Milna, this little fishing village on Brač island that most tourists completely miss because they’re all rushing off to Zlatni Rat beach. Their loss, really.

The building itself won’t win any architecture awards – it’s that practical Mediterranean style you see everywhere along the coast, white walls with those blue shutters that actually work (I always test them). But here’s the thing about three-star places in Croatia: they focus on what actually matters. The apartment I stayed in had this tiny balcony where you could hear the boats clinking in the harbor early morning, and the kitchen was properly equipped – not just a mini-fridge and a prayer like some places. The owner, this weathered guy who’s probably been running boats longer than I’ve been alive, actually showed me how to work the somewhat temperamental shower. Pro tip: give the hot water a minute to get going, especially if you’re showering after the German family in apartment 3 (they take forever).

What really sold me on this place was walking down to the harbor at sunset – it’s maybe two minutes from the front door – and realizing I had stumbled into something special. Milna’s got this working waterfront where actual fishermen still bring in their catch, not just tourist boats doing the island-hopping circuit. There’s a little konoba right on the water where the owner’s wife makes this incredible peka (you have to order it in the morning, but trust me on this). The whole village sort of winds down around 10 PM, which means you’ll actually sleep – unlike those places in Split where the clubs go until dawn. I mean, if you’re looking for nightlife, this isn’t your spot, but if you want to hear actual waves instead of techno music, you’ve found it. The 7.5 rating feels about right – it’s not luxury, but it’s genuine in a way that those polished resort places never quite manage to be.
