The Big Family apartment sits on Mainski put – honestly, I had to ask a local how to pronounce that street name – but it’s this quietly residential area where you’ll hear actual Montenegrin families going about their day instead of just tourists dragging suitcases over cobblestones.

The three bedrooms are legitimately spacious, which I wasn’t expecting from the photos. I mean, we’ve all been burned by those wide-angle lens tricks before, right? But this place delivers on space. The kitchen actually has proper counter space for cooking (there’s a little market about a five-minute walk down the street where locals shop – much better prices than the touristy spots), and the living area doesn’t feel cramped even when everyone’s hanging out after a beach day. The balcony overlooks this sort of neighborhood courtyard situation where you can watch kids playing football and old men playing cards, which honestly became my favorite part of staying here. It’s real Montenegro, you know?

Here’s the thing about the location – you’re not right in Old Town Budva with all the noise and crowds, but you’re close enough that it’s maybe a 15-minute walk to the main action. Sometimes that felt perfect, especially when we wanted to escape the tourist madness and grab groceries or just sit somewhere quiet. Other times, after a long day of sightseeing, that walk back felt a bit much (though honestly, the exercise probably did us good after all those Balkan dinners). Parking was surprisingly manageable – there’s street parking that locals showed us, though good luck finding a spot during July and August. The host was genuinely helpful with stuff like that, not just the usual “here are the keys, WiFi password is on the fridge” routine. They actually seemed to care that we had a good stay, which you don’t always get with these family-run places.

The apartment gets pretty good natural light in the mornings, and it stays relatively cool even during those brutal summer afternoons – something about the way the building’s positioned. You’ll hear some street noise, but it’s more like real life happening rather than party noise, if that makes sense. My only real complaint? The shower pressure could be better, but honestly, after spending days walking around Budva’s old streets and swimming in the Adriatic, I wasn’t too picky about my rinse-off situation.
