You know what's funny about Sambra old town apartment?
You know what’s funny about Sambra old town apartment? The name doesn’t really do it justice – I mean, it sounds like just another vacation rental, but this place actually has character. When I first walked up to the building, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical because the entrance is pretty understated, but once you get inside, it’s got this authentic old European vibe that you can’t fake.
The apartment itself is honestly better than most 3-star hotels I’ve stayed in. The owners clearly put thought into the details – there’s this gorgeous original hardwood flooring that creaks just enough to remind you you’re in a historic building, but not so much that it’s annoying. The kitchen is actually functional too, which is rare for these old town places. I ended up cooking breakfast there most mornings because, well, the local café prices add up fast, and there’s something nice about having your coffee while looking out at the narrow cobblestone street below. The bathroom is modern enough (thank god) but they kept some of the original tilework, which I thought was a nice touch.
What really sold me on this place though was the location – and I don’t mean that in the generic “convenient location” way that every listing claims. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the main square, but tucked just far enough down a side street that you don’t get the late-night party noise. I could hear church bells in the morning, which sounds cheesy but was actually pretty charming. The building is right next to this tiny bakery that opens at 6 AM – the smell of fresh bread drifting up was honestly better than any alarm clock. There’s also a small grocery store maybe fifty meters away, run by this elderly couple who don’t speak much English but are incredibly sweet and patient.
The 8.7 rating makes total sense to me. It’s not luxury by any stretch, but everything works, it’s clean, and there’s free wifi that actually functions properly. The shower has decent water pressure, which – trust me – matters more than you think when you’re walking around old towns all day. My only real complaint is that the walls are a bit thin, so you might hear your neighbors, but that’s pretty standard for these historic buildings. Check-in was smooth too – the property manager met me right on time and gave me some solid local recommendations that weren’t just the obvious tourist traps. Honestly, for the price point and that location in the old town, you’re getting a lot more authenticity than you would at some generic hotel chain.
