Honestly, I wasn't expecting much when I first walked up to the Viola Hotel on 4.
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to the Viola Hotel on 4. Proleterske – I mean, it’s not exactly the main drag in Budva’s Old Town. But you know what? That actually turned out to be one of its biggest advantages. You’re close enough to walk to Slovenska Beach in about eight minutes (I timed it), but far enough from the late-night club chaos that you can actually sleep with your windows open.
The hotel itself has this sort of understated elegance that feels refreshingly authentic for Montenegro. The lobby’s got these gorgeous marble floors that stay cool even during those brutal July afternoons, and the staff – well, they actually seem to enjoy their jobs, which is rarer than you’d think in Budva’s tourist zone. My room on the third floor had this unexpected little balcony that looked out toward the marina area, and honestly, watching the sunset reflect off those red-tiled roofs while sipping coffee from their surprisingly decent machine became my daily ritual. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid four-star – clean linens that smell like they were dried in actual sunshine, air conditioning that works without sounding like a helicopter, and bathrooms with proper water pressure (trust me, after a day of exploring Budva’s steep cobblestone streets, this matters).
What really sold me on this place, though, was how it felt like a proper base camp rather than just a place to crash. The front desk guy – I think his name was Marko – gave me these insider tips about avoiding the tourist traps on Njegoševa street and pointed me toward this incredible seafood spot that locals actually frequent. Plus, there’s decent parking nearby, which anyone who’s driven through Budva’s narrow streets during peak season will appreciate. The hotel sits in this quieter residential pocket where you’ll hear church bells in the morning instead of construction noise, but you’re still a fifteen-minute stroll to the medieval walls and all that Instagram-worthy Old Town scenery. I’d definitely stay here again – it strikes that sweet spot between being comfortable enough for your parents but cool enough that you won’t feel like you’re missing out on the real Montenegro experience.
