The apartment I stayed in had these big windows that let in ridiculous amounts of morning light, and the kitchen was actually functional – I mean, you could legitimately cook a proper meal if you wanted to skip the tourist restaurants for a night. The owner, Marko, met me personally for check-in and gave me this whole rundown of the neighborhood that you’d never get from reading reviews online. He told me which bakery opens earliest (crucial information, by the way) and warned me that the parking situation gets sketchy during peak summer, but there’s this little side street two blocks down where locals park.

What really struck me was how clean everything felt – and I don’t just mean housekeeping clean, though that was spot-on too. There’s something about the way the whole building is maintained that tells you the people running it actually care. The hallways smell like lavender instead of that musty hotel carpet smell, and the WiFi was honestly better than what I have at home. I spent a couple mornings working from the little balcony area, watching the neighborhood wake up with coffee vendors setting up their carts and kids walking to school. That 9.7 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there – it’s not because they’re doing anything revolutionary, but because they’re doing all the basic stuff really, really well. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the water pressure in the shower was fantastic.
